History of GMT - Our association with M/S. Techno Valves.

This company manufacture different kinds of non ferrous valves for gas industries. They have a number of ACE CNC Lathes fitted with GMT 2 Jaw Power Chucks. Sometime in Feb 2010 our Mr. Mahendran and Mr. Karthikeyan visited them and met Mr. Rohit Behani, Exec. Mfg. & Sales, Techno Valves and created enquiry for  200 mm dia. Power Operated Power Indexing chuck suitable for ACE CNC Lathe. However, in early July 10 customer decided to order for Mazak CNC Lathe Model Quick Turn Star and asked for fresh quotation for 200 mm dia Power Operated Power Indexing chuck. Mr, Sengupta who retired from LMW as GM and joined Mazak India Kolkatta interacted with GMT. Since he had several interactions with GMT during his tenure at LMW,  he understood the products thoroughly and helped GMT, Techno and Mazak   to initiate discussions and sort out several technical issues viz. dedicated Power Pack for Power Operated Power Indexing chuck, hydraulic and electrical circuit and logic write up ( Interfacing for indexing chuck). The details were sent to Mazak Singapore.  Order for  2B 200 Power Operated Power Indexing chuck complete package including Power Pack and all accessories including special jaws was placed upon us on 17th Aug. 10.
On receipt of the order further finalization of jaw design took place. We had difficulty in one particular component for offering special jaws. We overcame the difficulty and offered modified jaw design. Received Spindle details and the Chuck with accessories were manufactured. Component trials were done on our LMW Rigi 25 CNC Lathe. The chuck with accessories were dispatched on 20th Feb. 10.
The Mazak Machine was installed in the new factory of Techno Valves and our team visited on 20th Apr. 10 to commission the chuck. The chuck successfully commissioned with electrical interface with the Mazak Engineer and our Mr. Kandan. Final trials were taken and obtained report from Techno valves that the chuck is working satisfactorily.

History of GMT - Our association with M/S. Associated Toolings Kolkatta.

I met Mr. Karmarkar and Mr. Bishnu of Associated Toolings at HAL Koraput. This was 3 decades back. HAL guest house in those days a meeting point for a number of company executives who visit HAL. At that time Associated Tooling were making Jigs & Fixtures and supplying to HAL.

When I was looking after Sales at Kolkatta I used to visit Associated Toolings regularly and they bought our Cast Iron Surface Plate, Angle Plate, Box Angle Plate and Granite Surface Plate. They set up a machine shop. They purchased Power Chucks from us. They switched over to the manufacture of  Valves and Bonnet. They were regularly buying Power Operated Hand Indexing Chuck.

Early March 2007, they showed interest in our  Power Operated Power Indexing Chuck. After prelimanery discussions and study of their components we recommended 275 mm dia. Power Operated Power Indexing Chuck. We then initiated discussions with Machine supplier viz. LMW. We then sent our offer  to Associated Toolings by end Mar. 07. After a further interaction order for the chuck and other accessories except hydraulic power pack was placed by Associated Toolings upon us by end May. 2007 to be fitted on LMW Rigi 25 CNC Lathe.

We took almost 9 months to supply the chuck. This is due to the fact that during design and manufacture several issues had to be addressed including balancing. The chuck performance was very satisfactory and customer was able to increase his out put of valves due to our chuck.

History of GMT - Manual chucks-conclusion

HMT Kalamaserry and HMT Bangalore are still buying our Hand Operated Chucks. They are fitted on their NH 22, NH 26 AND L 45 Lathes.

We tried selling chucks in the US. We supplied to Leblond Makino who were making manual lathes in 1987 in Singapore. Swamy (former Marketing Director-GMT), PV (Founder-GMT), Leela(present Chairperson-GMT) and I met Mr.K.S.Shankaran who was in charge of US sales. But unfortunately in the US they use scroll chucks. Their approach was use and throw and did not give much importance to long life.

Over a period of time manual chucks were replaced by Power Chucks. However, GMT Manual Chucks are still preferred for machining certain components.

History of GMT - The BHEL story

I recall during my visit with PV and Voltas Madras Branch Manager to BHEL Tiruchi to discuss about our chuck. We went to the Superintendent of valve production office and waited for him. On his table scroll chuck parts were lying. The Superintendent walked in and PV asked him regarding the parts lying on his table. In the meanwhile PV introduced himself. The Superintendent said why GMT are not in the chuck line. This surprised us and PV politely informed the Superintendent that GMT are in chuck manufacturing and explained the chuck design and deputed LSM with a chuck for demonstration and we received several orders for our chucks from BHEL. Tenders from Public sector and defense used have our specifications so that orders can be placed upon us.

History of GMT - Manual Chucks - India Pistons story

GMT chucks proved very successful in machining auto liners made of CI Castings. India Pistons one of the leading manufacturer of liners had machining problems. PV suggested certain changes in liner casting so that the special jaw to suit our chuck will ensure firm grip on the liner during machining.

India Pistons were very happy with the chucks performance and recommended our chuck to all their subcontractors and we sold a number of our 3B 250 mm chucks with special jaws....

History of GMT - Manual Chucks - Part-2

Physically chucks were taken for demo to Machine Tool Builders factories, HMT units at Bangalore, Kalamassery and Pinjore. Industrial Plants and Texmaco Ward.

PV personally  visited with Voltas reps to HAL Koraput, MTPF Ambernath BHEL Tiruchy and demonstrated our chuck and gained their acceptance in spite of lower priced scroll chuck. L. Subramaniam of our sales department was entrusted to carry out demos.  Heavy metal removal on castings and forgings using full HP of the machine. An ammeter was used in the electrical circuit to check how much current is drawn during machining. Machines were unable to withstand cutting load. But the Chuck did not loose its gripping force during machining...
