History of GMT - The BHEL story



I recall during my visit with PV and Voltas Madras Branch Manager to BHEL Tiruchi to discuss about our chuck. We went to the Superintendent of valve production office and waited for him. On his table scroll chuck parts were lying. The Superintendent walked in and PV asked him regarding the parts lying on his table. In the meanwhile PV introduced himself. The Superintendent said why GMT are not in the chuck line. This surprised us and PV politely informed the Superintendent that GMT are in chuck manufacturing and explained the chuck design and deputed LSM with a chuck for demonstration and we received several orders for our chucks from BHEL. Tenders from Public sector and defense used have our specifications so that orders can be placed upon us.

HMT Kalamaserry and HMT Bangalore are still buying our Hand Operated Chucks. They are fitted on their NH 22, NH 26 AND L 45 Lathes.

Over a period of time manual chucks were replaced by Power Chucks. However, GMT Manual Chucks are still preferred for machining certain components.

History of GMT - The Berg Story



GMT entered into technical collaboration with Berg, Germany for the manufacture of Hand Operated Chucks in 1963.  Berg Germany were manufacturing sizes 3B 160 to 3B 630 mm dia. 7 sizes viz. 160, 200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630. Berg gave all drawings for chucks, jigs and fixtures, cutting tools, gauges and operation sheets.

Initially sizes 3B 160, 3B 200 and 3B 250 mm dia. were taken up. 3B 250 mm dia.  was a very popular size in those days so we started with a prototype of this size. Right from machining process and fixturing for certain machining process spl cutting tools for milling and drilling and using  existing machines for machining chuck parts posed several challenges and grim struggle. We overcame all odds and completed the first 3B 250 mm dia. in 1966.

The first chuck was taken personally by PV to Bangalore by car to show to Mr. Grautoff  MD Gildemeister who was on a visit.  We were working throughout the night and grinding the hard jaws in position. to achieve runout as per standards. Accuracy was no where in sight. Due to continuous grinding gripping serrations in the hard jaws disappeared. Fortunately we had made soft jaws. The chuck was sent with soft jaws. 


After PV showed the chuck to Mr.Grautoff, the chuck was brought back to GMT and refitted with a hard jaw and achieved accuracy as per standard.  Today GMT is the leading manufacturer of lathe chucks in India!

GMT – The beginnings – Part-2


The factory used to be lit by tube lights, the floor was dark with oil and coolant soaked in from innumerable spills from the hundreds of trial assemblies of special purpose machines, and the air was redolent of the smells of machine oil, coolant and grease. 
Purchase of part for machines was a HUGE challenge.Nothing was available locally in Pallikaranai and all parts had to be purchased from Mount Road or George Town
and the excitement of each installation merited heated discussions and arguments, with with the whole team wanting to know everything about the machine design,the commissioning problems and the customer feedback.
Voltas were our sales agents. This gave us access to the industrial markets in India. When we parted with them, we established our own network by carrying a chuck in a box from customer to customer. PV*, Jagannathan**, LSM*** have trudged for miles carrying an Hand Operated Chuck in a suitcase to demonstrate and sell. In the old days one just walked into any establishment and expect to be welcomed with warm hospitality and friendship and a willingness to learn. Today one has to fix an appointment and cross the “security barrier” before one can meet a prospective user.

The dedication and the perseverance of our sales team paid off with GMT establishing itself as the most reliable brand for chucks in the Indian market.

GMT Hand Operated Chuck



Hand Operated Chuck (HOC) : The production capacity of a lathe is entirely a function of the chuck used, the gripping power and the true running of the chuck.

A lathe with the excellently engineered GMT chuck enhances the productive capacity of the lathe which provides the answer to faster and better guaranteed production.




CONSTRUCTION :
The conventional bevel gear and the scroll have been replaced by a worm and wormwheel with three circular cams, to operate the jaws. The chrome case hardened wormwheel-cum-camring ensures maximum resistance to wear. The entire reaction of the clamping forces of the three jaws are confined in and taken up by the worm wheel-cum- camring and not by the chuck body or component parts.
The chuck body and the wormwheel-cum- camring are made from steel forgings, which provide the desired grain flow and thus minimize distortion under the clamping forces. All the parts are amply proportioned, made from high tensile alloy steels, hardened and ground wherever necessary, to close limits of accuracy. The hard jaws are provided with gripping serrations to grip the work piece firmly.
The normal dimensional variation in the gripping diameter of jobs is taken care of by the adequate stroke of the base jaws, thus avoiding frequent resetting of the top jaws.
On each circular cam, slides a chrome case- hardened button with a groove of the same radius as the cam. This provides a large pressure bearing area to the load transmitting surfaces. The large bearing surfaces reduces the stress per unit area to the minimum and completely inhibits any denting of the circular cam.

ADVANTAGES :
Because of the comparatively small number of well designed parts used in the chuck, frictional losses are reduced to minimum. The worm, wormwheel and the circular cam give the chuck an amazingly high mechanical advantage resulting in a grip many many times more powerful than that of a scroll chuck, for the same effort applied at the chuck key. Appropriate cam rise, combined with worm drive, ensures self locking action of the chuck over the entire clamping range and this guarantees the safety of the operator.
The top jaws are positively located on the base jaw by serrations ground after the jaws are case hardened. The top jaws can be quickly reset for different sizes of work pieces by merely loosening two socket head screws, shifting the jaw to the appropriate serration and re-tightening.
Three Jaw chuck of sizes from 125 mm dia. to 315 mm dia. are offered with serrations of 1.5 x 60o on the base jaws.
Sizes 400 mm dia. to 800 mm dia. are provided with 'V' Serrations of 3/32" x 90o.

SOFT JAWS :
Soft Jaws are made from low carbon steel and used for second operation. They are used for gripping finished diameters and are supplied as blanks. They are reversible, so that both ends can be used.
The gripping diameters are to be machined in position on the chuck. This will ensure true running of the job on soft jaws, within close limits.
